The traditional approach to handling a lithium-ion battery cell encompasses three fundamental procedures: (1) the fabrication of electrodes, (2) the assembly of the cell, and (3) the finalization (or formation) of the cell [8,10].
The current method for electrode production relies on a slurry casting technique, in which the dry components are dispersed in a limited quantity of solvent to create a slurry mixture. This slurry is then applied onto a current collector, followed by drying to eliminate the solvent. Subsequently, the coated layer is calendared (or compressed) to achieve a desired porosity level (Figure 14.1).
Cathode and anode assembly typically comes after the powder coating process, with all electrodes built first. After being punched and packed into a pouch, the cathode and anode sheets will be folded using a separator into a cell.
