With the help of their powerful claws on their front flippers, they can break through ice to make breathing holes. Adult seals can weigh between 70 and 140 kg (71 to 309 lb) and measure between 100 and 175 cm (39.5 to 69 in) depending on the subspecies and sex. The seal is 1.5 meters (5 feet) long on average.
